Warn the Children (also see video)

Eleven year old Jamie woke up in the middle of the night and saw a pint-sized spirit girl about her own age sitting on the foot of her bed. The spirit told Jamie that she once lived on earth, but died young and was now her guardian angel. The spirit was with her throughout the day, and at night they discussed how Jamie should respond to school bullies and other problems. Jamie had friend, a confidant. They shared many secrets.

But after a couple months, the spirit bullied Jamie—called her names and mocked her for behaving badly at school. Jamie was afraid to go to bed and slept with the blanket over her head. When she peeked out, she saw the spirit girl staring hard back at her. She terrified Jamie.

Finally, Jamie told her mother, who brought Jamie for prayer after Sunday worship service. Jamie asked Jesus to help her. Later, I sat with Jamie on her bed with an open Bible in my lap. She said, “I’m so sorry. I didn’t know it was evil. I tell her to leave but she laughs at me.”

I assured Jamie that Jesus would remove the demon. “Jesus wants you to rely on him. Tell Jesus that you are sorry for relying on the spirit instead of him.”  I told her not to speak or look at the demon—but to focus on Jesus. “Jesus rules over this demon, and Jesus wants you to cling to him like a vine. Trust him to protect you. Call on him and read Scripture verses out loud when you are afraid—like this one:

“’The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe’ (Proverbs 18:10). Jamie, you are a child of God! Jesus himself covers you in his righteousness.”

Jamie kept a Bible by her bed and read verses before she went to sleep and sometimes during the night. Her faith strengthened as Jesus protected her. The demon came less often and after a couple months not at all. (This story is found in Silencing Satan.)

Warn the children not to talk to spirits!

God tells us: “Let no one be found among you who . . . who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord (Deuteronomy 18:10–12).

People who don’t know the Bible believe that the supernatural realm is a neutral place—it’s not. Kids learn about the supernatural realm from the Internet and entertainment industry. Too often, children find themselves face to face with spiritual evil and don’t know what to do.

Warn the children not to talk to spirits and not to go looking for spirits of the dead. Rely on Jesus and read the Bible. Jesus gives us power and guidance in this life and the next. Call on His name. Jesus will deliver you from evil.
